Tell us about yourself.
I am Aaliyah Whitmire; firm Christ believer, wife to Emmanuel, mother to Emma, world traveler, mechanical engineer, and owner of Glorious Day Event Services where my goal is to help every bride create the wedding of their dreams, regardless of budget, and with the least amount of stress as possible.
You have recently started a wedding planning business called Glorious Day Events, how did this come about?
I simply love to host! I enjoy hosting events, parties, talks, dinners, dances, friends, and family. Hosting is honestly a hobby for me. I am always first to offer to throw friends’ bridal showers, birthday parties, baby showers, and more. People had always told me I was good at it and often asked when the next event was.
This love of hosting, combined with working under other event planners over the years, and seeing other women of color start their own businesses, culminating in a desire to do the same. We have all heard the quote “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, I decided to turn what I love into my evening and weekend work.
Where do you see your brand/business/passion in the next 5 years?
With God all things are possible! My wildest dream would be for Glorious Day Events to be my full-time job and to have built a brand in which all my business is by word of mouth and referrals.
What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
To be honest, my biggest challenge was deciding to monetize my hobby by starting the business! Fear and imposter syndrome can keep us stagnant for years if we let it. I’ve always known I should start the business, but never felt confident enough to do so.
Storytime… I saw a post in a Facebook group where a bride’s planner had canceled her wedding and she was searching for advice and help. I reached out to her and let her know I was sorry this happened to her and that I would help plan her wedding for her at no charge. Little did I know that I’d end up planning, decorating, coordinating, and ultimately officiating the wedding! It was the most beautiful day and it brought me so much joy to see my bride happy, in love, and enjoying her day! The bride and groom ended up paying me very generously and proceeded to tell other brides about my work. I then had brides reaching out to me and made the choice to go out on my own and start my business.
What advice would you give another young woman?
Go for it! Follow your dreams! Believe in yourself! Know that the answer will always be a No if you never ask or try. Do not let fear rule your life! Remember 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind. With God, All things are possible!
What message is on your heart to share right now?
Never doubt yourself and stop being your own worst critic! It took years of others believing in me and offering to pay for my volunteer services before I realized I was talented and special. Who knows where I would be had I started this business back in 2018/2019 when I was first offered money for a luxurious Breakfast at Tiffany’s Bridal Shower I threw for a co-worker?
Take a shot in believing in yourself, put in the work, and let God take care of the rest!
Where is your favorite place to go in DFW?
I have so many favorites, but I’ll highlight my love of the arts! I truly love theatre, plays, musicals, monologues, etc. The Richardson Theatre Centre keeps a good lineup year-round. It’s smaller, but always such a good time.
