Meet Niara Woods, a vibrant 28-year-old from New Orleans, Louisiana. She currently is the Director of Marketing and Communication at Southern University at New Orleans.
Niara earned a Bachelor of Mass Communication from LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication and a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from the University of New Orleans. She’s now pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at UNO, focusing her research on the career development of black women in higher education institutions.
She is actively engaged in her community, and Niara is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., initiated through the Eta Kappa Chapter at LSU.
When academia isn’t calling, Niara lets her adventurous spirit fly, exploring new places with friends and laughing loudly (some may say screaming) in local restaurants.
Where do you see your brand/business/passion in the next 5 years?
Niara’s portfolio includes work with several schools, churches, and organizations like SydOnStyle, Rae Dawson Realtor, The Blooming Effect Podcast, Sherelle A. Reed Enterprises LLC, and the Committee to Elect Judge Veronica Henry.
In 2024, Niara is set to officially launch “Octavia Communications.” Over the next five years, she envisions growing her firm as a valuable resource for black women-owned businesses, integrating her dissertation research to help the women grow individually.

What has been your biggest accomplishment and why?
Niara cherishes her friendships as her greatest accomplishment and is proud of the relationship they have.
What message is on your heart to share right now?
Niara’s heartfelt message for every woman is to “go for it!” Despite any obstacles or seemingly impossible challenges, she encourages them to relentlessly pursue the lives they desire and truly deserve.

What do you consider your “Superpower”?
Niara possesses a unique superpower: the ability to develop authentic intergenerational relationships with women. Her welcoming personality allows her to effortlessly bridge the generation gap, forming meaningful connections that transcend age. She utilizes her superpower to uplift and empower others, working towards a world where women feel supported and inspired to reach their full potential.
What do you love most about New Orleans?
Niara is all about the Mardi Gras spirit!
In her younger years, she danced with school groups and city troupes during the parades.
Now, you’ll spot her at Mardi Gras parties and balls, rocking bold, sometimes sequined dresses on the dance floor.
Niara has ridden on floats in several parades, but her heart truly belongs to the Krewe of Nefertiti—a Mardi Gras Krewe and service organization dedicated to supporting New Orleans East, the neighborhood where Niara was born and raised.
