Inspire, Influence, Ignite

Imagine this: it’s June 2023, and I find myself amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the National Apartment Association Apartmentalize event in Atlanta. It’s here that I had the honor of personally meeting an inspiring woman whose presence in our group left a lasting impact. Known among Melanin in Multifamily circles as “The Big Speaker,” Dana Duckworth, hailing from Norfolk, VA, stole the show with her platform, “Speak Up Dana, Speaking & Consulting.”

Today, we’re taking a closer look at Dana’s journey and insights, exploring the dynamic intersection of speaking and consulting in the multifamily housing industry. What’s even more impressive is her remarkable podcast, Hilariously Unemployed. Join me as we unravel the layers of Dana’s expertise and experiences in this semi-formal exploration of her multifaceted contributions to the industry.

Can you share with us your journey and how you became a nationally recognized public speaker and DEI consultant?

The murder of George Floyd in 2020 ignited my passion to make spaces inclusive in my previous workplace. I founded the black employee resource group in that organization and my hunger continued to grow for the work of DEI. I sought out formal education and from there, my career changed from that of a salesperson to a people person.

Your podcast, “Hilariously Unemployed,” has gained popularity. How did the concept for the podcast come about, and what has been the most rewarding aspect of hosting it?

My podcast is a direct reflection of my real life and experience. I was laid off in June of 2023 and I knew that others had to be facing similar challenges and dealing with the complex emotions of the situation. I wanted to help! I have always simply wanted to help others!

Hilariously Unemployed” seems to provide a unique perspective on unemployment. What motivated you to create a podcast specifically dedicated to this topic?

The massive number of layoffs was a driver. Every day I would log on to LinkedIn looking for my next role and see so many people expressing their sadness in their search because they had recently been let go.

How do you define success?

For me, success is defined by impact and those I touch through my work.

Dana Duckworth

Can you share a memorable moment or episode from your podcast that had a significant impact on your audience or yourself?

In the last episode of the season, I speak to a woman who wrote a book about financial literacy for black and brown people. She spoke about how refreshing it felt to be able to pay for a new tire when historically any issue with a vehicle would have set her or her family back. It made me think about the financial constraints my mother had to deal with and how even now an issue with my car gives me immediate anxiety regardless of my ability to afford the repairs.

Given the diverse topics you cover on the podcast, how do you decide on the themes and guests for each episode?

I do discovery calls with my guests and the test to make it to the show is as simple as Did we laugh? And will your story help someone else or provide a resource my audience can benefit from?

Hilariously Unemployed” is not just informative but also entertaining. How do you ensure that your podcast resonates with listeners and keeps them engaged?

Humor is the way I navigate life so it is just me being myself with others listening in the chaos of the person that I am. It has become therapeutic for me.

Your podcast likely attracts a diverse audience. How do you navigate the balance of addressing universal themes while acknowledging the unique challenges faced by different individuals?

I think everyone can relate to the career journey, even if they haven’t been fired or laid off, they have experienced something in their journey that connects them to myself and my guests.

Who is your role model?

My role models are the many women in my life. My mother, my grandmothers, my best friend, and the many amazing women I work alongside that I have the honor of calling my friends.

Any other information you would like to share?

I am really funny! Humor is the essence of my being!
