American Beauties Plus Queen Excellence 2022-2023

My name is Mrs. Karla Young-Person and I have been teaching for 35 years. My classifications include Health K-12, ESL K-12 and Special Education K-12. My school is Columbus Africentric Early College. I also enjoy Pageantry, modeling, fashion designing and being a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
I was recruited right from college and began teaching at the age of 22. Once I got my 30 years in I retired. Six months later I returned as a substitute teacher because I missed the students. Covid hit not too much longer after that and we all had to adjust to home-based learning.

I started modeling in 2017,started my Fashion line, THICK-iish in 2018 and my pageant journey in 2021. Some of my challenges started as a child. Being the only chocolate chunky girl growing up in the 70’s and 80’s in my neighborhood was definitely a challenge. There were not too many of us around. Kids can be
so mean. My parents divorcing and my dad abandoning his children my first year of college. My brother dying from AIDS. Raising my daughter as a single parent once I left my abusive marriage.

All these challenges before the age of thirty. I believe your scars remind you where you have been and what you were able to persevere through. It makes you who you are today. If I had to talk about more prevalent challenges, it would still be my weight, however being diagnosed with blood clots in both my lower
extremities and realizing that is a lifelong diagnosis, that’s scary. I could have chosen to live my life in fear or I could rise, thank the Lord for one more day and live life to the fullest. I have chosen the latter.

My greatest accomplishments are by far my children. They range in age from 32-19, four girls and two boys. I have a blended family. One daughter from my first marriage, four bonus babies and one daughter with my current spouse. Altogether we have one child with a Master’s degree, three children with Bachelor’s, one child returning to North Carolina A&T as a sophomore and one child finally deciding to attend college this fall. We, Mr. Person and I, are very proud parents.

Looking ahead, I would still like to get my Master’s degree, lose fifty pounds, get my face on a billboard, continue to fashion design and win Elite Queen with my pageant system. I have a lot to do. I better get started. I totally forgot to mention my pageantry platform, LGBTQA Awareness with an emphasis on teens. Two of my daughters are gay and they have taught me so much about the community. I guess all I’m really trying to do is get your babies to love my babies. Let’s focus more on character than who we chose to love. I could care less about what bathroom you use, just remember to wash your hands afterwards.
That’s really what’s important!
