Necessity is the Mother (Earth) of Invention

When discovering they have an allergy to a substance, many people just avoid that item, right?  But what if it’s an item that you need every day? 

This is what happened when SITIGirl Tia Scott, the creator of Down to Earth ™ Tooth Dirt as well as the owner of Mothers Earth®, creating natural plant based hygiene products, specializing in holistic oral care. 

In 2014, Tia developed an allergy to toothpaste. She tried literally everything on the market and had the same reaction to each one. “The lining of my mouth would feel like it was chemically burned causing my mouth to be extremely sore and the lining of my mouth would also shed.”  

In December of 2014, Tia started praying about the situation multiple times a day and was literally told, “make your own!”, so that is exactly what she set out to do. Tia began researching oral health in great detail and formulated her own healing. At this time, she had absolutely no intention of creating a product for anyone other than herself and definitely had no interest in it becoming a business, but God did! Once she started telling her friends about how great her mouth was feeling since she started using her newly created product, which is now called “Down to Earth™ Tooth Dirt” and they wanted in on it, so she started giving it to them. One Tia’s friends then gave some to another friend who had been suffering from periodontal disease for years and miraculously after a few weeks her condition had greatly improved and her gum line was returning to its normal state. She then made a Facebook post in October of 2015 and on that very status is where Tia sold the first jars and her business, Mothers Earth® was birthed. 

Now 8 years later, Tia is a member of the Black Chamber of Commerce and will be highlighting her products at this year’s Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration July 14th through the 16th. 

The main challenge that Tia has faced with her business is finding help with growing her brand as well as funding to do so. Last year, she hired an assistant to help in all the areas that she lacked which were marketing (the most) and conveying her brand in a more sophisticated way. “This past May we launched our new branding, and it has been a hit with our consumers. It has opened so many new doors for us and I think we are finally able to overcome some of our past challenges.”

One main thing that Tia would like people to know is that her products and business were birthed from a personal need, not personal gain and she has every intention of always operating with love and integrity. “I will continue creating products that our community needs without all the unnecessary fillers and mess. We too use our products, and we want the best for our overall health because that’s what’s most important great health.”

Mothers Earth® currently provides an entire plant based oral care line of Down to Earth™ products like Tooth Dirt, which is the original product that Tia created for herself.  Tooth Dirt is a powdered total toothpaste replacement packed with the nutrients our teeth and mouths need to thrive naturally. Tooth Dirt comes in three different flavors; Original Mint, Orange Clove as well as CinnaMint. She also offers an Electric Alkaline version of this powder that is made with approved herbs from the Dr. Sebi alkalinity list. We also offer Dirt Rinse in mint and sea salt options, which are peroxide and non-peroxide based mouthwashes. This line also has an assortment of other products like toothpaste, oil pull, coconut charcoal whitener, copper tongue scrapers, bamboo toothbrushes and charcoal dental floss. All of her products are handmade in small batches with love, by me. In addition to our oral care line, she offers plant-based facial care products and will soon be reintroducing our body care line. 

In a time when many businesses struggled, one of Tia’s greatest accomplishments is being able to not only sustain but also to grow significantly during Covid. That was huge for us and showed her that the people really rocked with us and believed in our vision for creating healthy sustainable products for our community. Our latest great accomplishment is our rebrand and new marketing campaign, Mothers Earth® All Grown Up. We worked really hard on bringing this vision to fruition over the past year and we appreciate all the love this new look is receiving. 

When asked about her advice to those with a great idea or service that are scared to move forward, Tia would like people to know that no matter what they are facing in their efforts to grow their business never ever give up, if they are truly passionate and purposeful in their pursuit to greatness. “Nothing worth having will ever come easy, but as long as you are working, God will work even harder.”

What’s next for Tia and Mothers Earth®? At the end of July, we plan to relocate to continue growing our brand and we will be starting phase 2 of their All Grown Up campaign where we will be revamping our packaging for our facial line as well as amping up our marketing on social media as well as introduce our radio commercial through. In the next 2-3 years the goal is to also get into the Target accelerator program and step our brand up a few more notches.
