Rewriting Your Story

As we start August and look at our goal trackers, many of us realize that we are just a few months from the end of another year. If you’re like many, you realize that the goals that you set at the beginning of the year, or even a few months ago may not be quite where you wanted them to be.

So many of us had dreams, plans and goals for where we would be by certain points in our lives. We are raised to “check the box” and “Keep up with the Joneses”. Have you ever found yourself comparing yourself to someone your age, or that you knew in a “past life” and feeling that you should be further in your career, family, fitness, personal goals by now because they are? Let me tell you something SITIGirl, comparison is the thief of joy and by watching what someone else is doing, you’re wasting time from pursuing your own goals, and watering your own grass. If you have found yourself kicking off the year with the best intentions, writing down your dreams and plans, making a vision board, then throwing it on your unused treadmill, under the laundry that you meant to take to Goodwill someday, then kicking yourself for not doing more, then the time to stop all of that is now.

No matter what you’ve been through, no matter your current situation, financial status, career, or relationship status, one thing remains certain: There is only one YOU. YOU were created for a specific purpose. Your calling is YOURS and YOURS alone. Every setback that you have faced, is actually a setup for your victory.

Don’t let a detour, derail your journey

When we are born, we don’t come with a roadmap, or due date of when things in our lives must be accomplished. We place due dates on ourselves through our own ambitions or through the comparison game, but what if we stopped that for just a moment? What if we allowed ourselves a grace period? A mulligan? Or a redo? Sometimes what we thought was our end game ended up being something completely different that what we thought would bring us joy. And that’s okay, it’s okay to pivot, to redirect our course, or as Siri and GoogleMaps tell us (sometimes rudely), “make a u-turn”. It’s okay to course correct, try new things, realize it’s not for us and make adjustments. No one wants to be a 90 year old bitter woman mad that we stayed in a relationship, career, or situation that didn’t serve us. (Raise your hand if you’ve wasted time in one of those scenarios. I know I have). The one thing that we can never replace is time, so stop wasting yours with “what ifs” or “why me”? It’s time for action.

One thing that we fail to realize as “goal getters” is that sometimes the way that we speak to ourselves, or the expectations that we have of ourselves are much worse than the ones we have of people that we love. How often have you spoken harshly to yourself (whether in your mind or out loud?). How would you react if someone talked to your best friend, loved one, or even a puppy the way that you talk to yourself? You would be HEATED. You would tell that person to back off, and maybe worse. Don’t YOU deserve that same love and protection? What I’m saying SITIGirl is that you need to show yourself some love, grace and patience. You deserve it.

Now, let’s get back to those goals and dreams. There is no timeline, no expiration date, it’s never too late to start the work towards any dream. As long as there is breathe in your lungs, the sky is the limit. It’s all about what story you tell yourself, whether you believe you can or can’t, and do you really want it?

As long as there is still a desire in your heart, you can rewrite your story. Turn the page, grab your pen and rewrite your story’s ending. There is no limit to what you can do.
