What inspired you to venture into the world of pageants?

I always had an interest in pageants since I was a little girl. I would watch them on TV with my mom, but I never thought I would compete in one, until the age of 17 when I received an application at my high school (addressed directly to me after winning our school pageant) to compete for Miss Teenage Texas. (I grew up in El Paso, Texas). I competed for the first time in a “real’ pageant and received 2nd Runner-Up. This inspire me to go on and compete for Miss Black El Paso in 2002, where I received 1st Runner Up. By that point, I was drawn in and competed sporadically throughout the years.

What valuable lessons have you gained from your experiences in the world of pageantry?

I have learned that it is not about “me.” It is about being a leader of service and love. My goal during my reign was to make sure I acted as a servant to my community and do everything in love. People tend to think that pageantry is about self or just looking glamorous but it is truly about empowerment, leadership, and sisterhood. I experienced all of this. Not only did I strive to empower and inspire, but I was also empowered by the many women I met who were doing amazing things during their reigns all while being great wives and mothers.

If you had the opportunity to have a dinner conversation with any person, living or deceased, who would you choose?

I would love to be in the presence of Michelle Obama. She carries herself with such grace and poise that I would love to soak some of that up. She is a wise, intelligent woman and I would love to gain any knowledge that I can from her.

I have learned that it is not about “me.” It is about being a leader of service and love.

Can you recount a humorous or cringe-worthy incident from your life that still makes you chuckle or blush when you think about it?

My most recent embarrassing moment was when I was judging a pageant in New Jersey. After judging the interviews, the judges went for lunch. After lunch, I walked to the hotel to make sure I looked ok for the show (it was within walking distance). After everything looked ok, my husband drops me off at the venue. I walk past several people in line and inside, walk over to the judges’ table, sit, look down, and notice that my dress is split at the seam down the front and side. I have no clue when this happened, but I had walked past several families attending the pageant so I am pretty sure everyone saw my business. So I sit there at the table with my dress with the seams split and a huge hole in the front. Luckily, I am told there will be an intervention. I thank God for my tendency to overpack and remember I have an extra dress. I call my husband and ask him to bring the extra dress that I brought. He brings it just in time for me to rush backstage while some kind ladies cover me in a corner as I change into my new dress. I make it back just in enough time for the show to start again. I have no clue how much of my glory was seen, but it was very embarrassing to sit there as a queen whose dress malfunctioned!
