Mommying Through With Patience and Kindness

Mommy + Me: Aquanette, Anjahnette & Amour

Being a mom is a constant responsibility that demands patience and kindness. It’s also a whirlwind of fun and adventure that keeps you guessing from one moment to the next. For Aquanette, being a mom of two children and godmother to thirty-eight godchildren is a blessing that keeps her on her toes. Aquanette is a former St. Croix majorette and avid bowler in two leagues. Her five-year-old Anjahnette follows in her footsteps as a majorette, and her son Amour is your typical two-year-old; he thinks the world revolves around him and is not afraid to let that be known.

Being a mom is a non-stop job, which can be both challenging and rewarding. Whether it’s a good day or a bad day, there’s no break from it. Despite the stress it can bring, she wouldn’t trade it for anything. Her gray hair is a testament to the hard work, but it’s all worth it.

Life has thrown Aquanette many curveballs, and her biggest challenge with motherhood is struggling with patience, especially when managing daily challenges. Experiencing two premature births by C-section, the loss of Amour’s twin at birth, and losing her grandmother and father within a six-month period, she has learned to be patient with life. Even when it hits hard and unexpectedly, it’s important to focus on the positive aspects of life. Although it’s not always easy, this mindset has been crucial in helping her navigate through some of her most difficult moments as a mother. It’s no longer about her but about her family.

The family she’s nurturing and building never ceases to amaze her. Recently, Amour fell ill, and she took him to the emergency room. His sister Anjahnette displayed genuine concern for him, and Aquanette embraced her and reassured her that everything would be okay. Her response left Aquanette in tears: “Mommy, I know. I prayed to God, so I know he will be okay.” When unsure if she’s doing a good job, these little things reassure her that she is.

Even though they can drive her up the wall sometimes, spending time with her children is what really matters. She does not always give in to their demands and tries to make the most of all situations. She actively engages them at home and encourages conversation when they are in the car. Amour is currently in speech therapy, so she tries to incorporate fun ways to help him communicate with the family. Interestingly enough, Anjahnette and Amour seem to have their own language as she often translates what he’s trying to say, and surprisingly, Amour rarely disagrees. Another of her favorite things to do with her kids is to cuddle. It’s a special moment when they’re about to drift off to sleep, but it also serves as a reminder that no matter how old they get, they will always be my little ones. Knowing that they still need my love and affection is an incredible feeling.

Being a mom is not an easy job, and it requires patience and kindness, a lesson she tries her best to make sure that Anjahnette and Amour know. As the saying goes, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Sadly, kindness is becoming increasingly rare in our world. However, it’s important to remember that showing kindness is never a bad thing, even if others may not show the same level of kindness towards us.
