Mother Cynthia Dorsey

·  Tell us about yourself!

My name is Cynthia Quillens Dorsey I am a native New Orleanian born and raised in the 7th Ward. I attended Medard H. Nelson Elementary, Andrew J, Bell Middle School and graduated from Joseph S. Clark, Class of 1968. I worked many years from 1973 until Hurricane Katrina at Charity Hospital as a Human Resource Manager. I am a widow; the love of my life Dwight Dorsey is in heaven now. I am the mother of 2 amazing children, Arthur & Avery and the grandmother of Kade Lewis-Boyd.  I reside in Houston, TX with Avery and Kade. There is never a dull moment in our house. I used to love to cook but Avery is trying to step in my shoes now. I come from a big family, and we grew up in church. Church was and is my life especially since my grandfather was a Pastor. I used to sing in the choir at Pentecost Baptist Church, Asia, and Beacon Light. I was #5 in birth order. Which is the number of Grace!!  All 5 of my brothers are in heaven and there are 7 of us girls left, of which I am the 2nd oldest. I have wayyyy too many nieces, nephews to count…LOL

My Family

        ·  What has been your biggest accomplishment and why?

My biggest accomplishment is my family. Not only my biological children but after losing my mom at 18 I became the mother to two of my little sisters. It was important for to me to raise my family in the fear of God and to teach them that education was important. I got that from my mother the late Ethel Robinson Quillens who was one of the first graduates from what we now know as Dillard University but then it was called Straight Business School. I am proud to say that not just my sisters, but my children and my sisters’ children have all attended and graduated from HBCU’s.

·  What message is on your heart to share right now?

Pray for everything!! That is exactly what I have had do and will continue to do. Surviving cancer 4-times. I had breast cancer twice; stomach cancer and lung cancer and I am looking forward to beating it a 5th time as I have recently big diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. My faith has never failed me…God has never failed me! My theme that has helped me through these trials is “The Blood Still Works”.

·  What do you consider your “Superpower” or as we call it, What makes you the ISH?

My superpower is trusting GOD in and for everything. Sometimes it’s not easy to do but I guarantee you, trusting God is what keeps me sane through the trials of life.

Pray for everything!

·  What do you love most about New Orleans?

What I love most about New Orleans is growing up near my family. Most of us lived in the same area, which made us extremely close. Of course, the food, the music, the culture, and the Saints were always staples in my life. Who wouldn’t want to be a New Orleans Girl!
